At ilombra we offer two kinds of lighting-related services. The main one is lighting design using lighting luminaires directly from manufacturers. The other one is designing specific luminaires.
The lighting concepts we design take into account both the light quality and the light scenes we pursue, as well as all the architectural integration aspects of the equipment. This last aspect is key for us, and our designs include the necessary details to accomplish seamless integration.
Our workflow favors the client’s involvement in our processes and design solutions, making sure they understand and share the relevant aspects of the project.
Lighting design
To ensure that we meet the set objectives, we work in stages on our projects. But we know how to remain flexible: depending on the complexity and/or the dynamics of the project, we can adjust the content of each stage and the delivered goods. The stages are:
Conceptual design
At this stage, a conceptual proposal of the lighting design is developed and agreed upon with the client.
An in-depth study of the architectural project is required to prepare the proposal and subsequent specifications. This is a highly creative stage of design. We try to sketch out the suggested lighting solutions without forgetting the client’s wishes and verifying that they understand the concept, as well as the sources of inspiration.

Equipment definition and preliminary calculations
Once the conceptual design is approved, we preselect equipment and perform some calculations and preliminary regulation checks. Thus, we can present a preliminary budget or check if it adheres to the one already allocated.
Design of details
Now is the moment to precisely determine the desired luminaries and lamps lights (kinds, models, quantity, and place) and all the necessary information to integrate them into the architecture.
We make accurate calculations to analyze the key lighting magnitudes of the project and make sure they comply with regulations. This includes details on the changing lighting levels that the control system will have to measure, according to limitations and application zones. Furthermore, we also gather all the necessary information so that the purchasing department can buy the equipment (luminaries and lamps), and the installing company can design and install the electric control elements required by the lighting system.
Installation monitoring and lighting system commissioning
On-site monitoring is crucial to guide installers in the correct layout of lighting equipment and to evaluate the result, both of lighting and of the integrated architectural solutions designed for the equipment.
Design of luminaires
Some architectural projects with special aesthetic features require unique luminaires that cannot be found in a commercial catalog. At ilombra we develop, and design handcrafted luminaires in collaboration with glass makers, blacksmiths, carpenters, 3D printing companies as well as lighting electronics professionals.
Following the same stage workflow that seeks the client’s understanding and agreement, our methodology is:
Conceptual design
At this stage, we develop the lighting luminaire design and prepare a graphic model for the client to visualize before approval. It is a highly creative task which requires careful coordination with the architect in those projects with such a figure.

Design of details
Once the idea is approved, the detailed design is developed and the budget and manufacturing plan is defined. In addition, other relevant aspects are decided, such as the installation and the maintenance of the luminaires.
Manufacturing
With the final detailed design available, ilombra coordinates all the craftsperson involved in the manufacturing and monitors the luminaire assembly, installation, and commissioning.
